“Fitness to me isn't about a crunch or a push up, it's about taking your power back.” ~Jillian Michaels

Before I decided to use this quote in my blog, I really thought long and hard as to WHY I love it and WHY I decided to share it with YOU. To most people who walk in the gym, they are there because either a doctor has ordered them to "Start a workout program", or because they have an upcoming even they want to get "IN SHAPE FOR", or they just got out of a relationship so to get back at the "EX", they decide to start working out.

There are a SELECT few people who REALLY LOVE to workout. I see it all the time in the gym. Remember, I am 40. I have been in the fitness industry since I am 18 years old.... I am in the gym 7 days a week whether I am working out or working. I HAVE SEEN MORE THAN YOU WILL EVER REALIZE!

This quote is right on! FOR ME, fitness has been SO MUCH more of an emotional thing than a physical thing. Thank the LORD I am reaping the benefits! The gym was a way for me to get over an eating disorder, a bad marriage at 22 years old, struggles with being a single mom, struggles with other relationships, Happiness and eventually building me up form the inside out to what is: ME! Tina! I have an EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT to the gym, as a woman who pays a therapist $200 an hour for 10 years, and what does she get out of it??? Maybe some clarity??? Maybe some guidance? Who knows. What do  I get out of the gym instead of a therapist? A SICK ASS sweat going on, TIGHT lean muscles, a GREAT body, and confidence!

I FEEL EMPOWERED MORE EACH DAY! I have overcome so many obstacles in my life, and I give many thanks to the dumb bells, treadmills, squat racks, and the sweat dripping down my legs! NO THERAPIST could TOP that!

When I have a bad day and workout, I VENT, and take it out on the weights, the treadmill, and my jump rope. WHATEVER! I kick my own ass, until I am sweating all over the machines! Guess what happens an hour later? I am stress free, I FEEL better, I FEEL stronger and eventually over time, I become MORE EMPOWERED! Even on the days when I am GREAT emotionally, my workouts are even that much better! I am able to run a business with my husband, have dinner on the table EVERY NIGHT like clockwork, clean my house, do the laundry, workout and run for myself, train my clients, make my granola and Glo-Bites for my customers, design meal plans, take clients on food shopping trips... YOU NAME it- THIS girl gets it done!

And yes.... Here is a GREAT benefit: We can walk around the BEACH with skin showing...We are FIT, STRONG and HEALTHY!

Run baby run!

I am happy to finally tell you that Raha and I ran together outside for the second time together this week...... This time it was in her neck of the woods (Cos Cob, CT). We decided last week that today - Sunday we would do our long run. Now MIND YOU, I had in my journal to run 9 miles. I think my inner marathon child takes over my pen while I am writing these workouts and runs each week, because CLEARLY, afetr our 5 mile run and being exhausted and after today's 6 mile run, we are NOT ready for a 9-er yet. I woke up at 5:45am (YES, ON A SUNDAY), threw on my clothes, grabbed a banana, popped some vitamin C, threw on my baseball hat and some sunblock, and out the door I went. It was a PERFECT morning to run! NO humidity, and a slight chill...

A few things:
  • The day before you run, drink a TON of water (you should drink a ton anyway)
  • The night before you run, get to sleep early. We watched a movie, didn't get to bed until 11:00, only to find myself SLEEP-LESS, because my husband was snoring!
  • The day before- DO NOT CARB UP or eat a heavy meal for dinner. You will find yoruself having a very bad belly and you may have to run yourself to the bathroom on your run, because you HAVE THE RUNS!
  • The morning OF the run (5:45am), drink a cold glass of water and have a banana
  • Make sure you do some dynamic warm ups - Remember, you rolled out of bed less than 45 minutes ago! Get the blood flowing
  • DO NOT guzzle coffee right before- I did that this morning because I woke up super tired... only to end up with stitches in my side.
  • FINALLY, run your heart out. If your goal is 6 miles, then run 6 miles. Give ALL of your runs 200%
Off on our run, Raha took me through a BEAUTIFUL neighborhood over near Bruce Park. The homes, the GREEN grass on everyone's lawns, the SMELL of the tress and dirt, crossing a black squirrel with an auburne color tail... It was simply gorgeous! No humidity in the air, as the sun shined down on us. Runs like this are when I wish I used my iphone for music, but even still, I wouldn't have stopped running to take a picture, so...oh well.

During the run, I kept paying attention to my form. After watching the USA Olympic Track and Field trials last night I was super motivated to run, and run WELL! Just incase you missed it... ust watch this!

Their bodies, their DRIVE, their speed and form. My eyes were GLUED to the TV watching this last night!

CLEARLY, these women train 4-8 hours a day and ALL YEAR round focusing on training, and yes, that included being in the gym, lifting weights. They do lots of track work and drills to improve speed. Stretching is an OBVIOUS, and that also includes yoga and pilates. Closer towards competitions, their work load increases, and this includes more intervals and sprints. Their gym time doesn't stop. Maintaining a LOWER bodyfat is necessary, simply for SPEED.

Ah! back to Me & my FAB running partner- We did GREAT! Raha's garmin clocked us at 57:59- 6 miles. Not bad considering we stopped once for 1 minute and once for 30 seconds- Thanks to MISS. STITCH in my side! I have to figure out this stich crap, because it really pisses me off!

When I left Raha's, I rushed home, jumped in the shower, even did my hair and makeup,  made my oats and protein (to eat while I drive) went and trained Stacy at one club and then ran to my NEW club in Scarsdale to check on my staff. I seriously wondered at this point how I am so full of energy and how I am standing with both eyes open! Around 12:30, i was starving so I had a Kind Bar. It has the perfect amount of nuts to keep me satiated. At about 2:00, I ran home, grabbed Tyler to get him his favorite Pizza from Sal's, drove back to the house where I made my yummy lunch:
  • 2 slices Ezekiel toast
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 Dr. Preager's Veggie burger
  • slice tomato
  • cracked black pepper
That hit the spot, and while I am ready for a nap, I made a bunch of homemade meatballs and sauce for Mario & Tyler. Once that was done, I took off and now at my club in Rye to train a client at 4:30.

CAN YOU SAY SUPERWOMAN????

BEYOND hungry

No one knows your body better than YOU. Your body also knows your routine as far as when you eat everyday. Typically, I have the same routine day in and day out. Some days I eat a little more and some days I eat a little less. I DO NOT count calories- Besides, why do I need to count the calories in broccoli, salad and blueberries???? My diet is mainly plant based with the exception of egg whites, ground buffalo and the occasional canned Pole caught tuna. Other than that, I eat tons of nuts, veggies, salads and more veggies!

Today is a very strange day for my body, as it didn't know what the hell to think! I didn't have my clients first thing like I always do. Since my schedule on Tuesday and Thursdays has lightened up, I decided to shift some people over to Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, I have been going to my other Country Club Fitness Centers to check on my staff and make sure everyone is doing their best. As usual, I woke up this morning and made my oats, blueberries, coconut oil and protein powder. It has to be my most favorite meal of the day. I wake up with my internal alarm clock (my GROWLING BELLY). Before getting to Scarsdale this morning, I grabbed my coffee and off I went. As soon as I got here, I got right to work on helping my trainer Nicole get situated, and together we welcomed more members to their GORGEOUS fitness center. I guess you could say I was running around.

At about 9:30, I was STARVING! LUCKILY, I had my trusty LARA bar. The nuts kept me satiated for a good few hours. I knew that at 1:30, I would have to face my 5 mile run followed my hams and shoulders. I sucked down lots of water and figured that would keep me full, but not even close. I went to the cafe in the fitness center and grabbed the ONLY thing my body would like- A teeny bag of raw nuts including cashews pistachios and dried fruit like apricots. That did nothing as well, but my hunger was manageable.

At 1:15, Raha said she would be a little late, so I figured I would warm up and do my dynamic warm ups and by the time I was ready to run, she would be there. As always the HUTCH is packed like a can of sardines, so she didn't get there until about 2:20. I had already run 1.5 miles. I had planned on running 5 miles, but my body was running on empty, I couldn't stay focused and I was getting irritable. That's how I know my sugar levels are low. At my third mile, I decided to stop, and just push through my weights. Raha joined me.

Learn from this experience. DO NOT attempt to exert yourself on a long run or hard workout if you didn't have enough nutrients to back up your hard work. I didn't even get a pump in my workout and felt so shaky. This is something I NEVER do. I think that anyone who does this is PLAIN STUPID! You can't take your body to the next level without GREAT NUTRITION. A protein bar isn't good enough and neither is a bowl of lettuce. YOU NEED FUEL! I needed carbs! I needed protein! Nuts, and a lara bar didn't cut it!

What I should have done was either cancel the workout all together, or run home and grab a slice of Ezekiel toast with 3 egg whites & 1/2 a banana..... Heck we all make mistakes, and I sure learned my lesson.

I had to run back to the Scarsdale club so instead of driving home for a shake, I went to Andy's in Rye, got a huge coconut water, a large container of: lentils, arugula salad with mangos, sauted tofu about 2 cups and about 1.5 cups of steamed broccoli. Guess what! 30 minutes later I am STILL hungry! OH and I will be home to make about 5 egg whites including two whole eggs with Ezekiel toast and some coconut oil smothered on top with a little baked yam. GRRRRRRRRR......

Always remember: NUTRITION is 90% of your success in achieving a GREAT physique. ANYONE can look THIN or SKINNY and in MY opinion that isn't having a GREAT physique! Just sayin......

Hotter than a witches...

BOOB!

Seriously!?!? I LOVE the heat! I lived in Scottsdale Arizona, so when it was 115 degrees, I didn't mind- HONESTLY! BUT THIS- THIS WET HUMID THICK SWAMP ASS HEAT is GROSS!  The EAST COAST SUCKS!!!! I hate NY, NJ, CT and FLORIDA!!!!! WAY too humid!

Who is crazy enough to walk, run or be outside today?? I was NOT. I know my client Mary ran outside earlier in the day, and I told her she was NUTS, she agreed. I decided to take the day off from my workouts and there was no running on my schedule.

TOMORROW is going to be worse than today and SHIT! Raha and I have a 5 mile run! Well guess who isn't running outside! US! HELL NO! The treadmill will have to do. I am not crazy enough to risk passing out, or becoming dehydrated.

Are you a runner? If so, do you run in the heat?

As for my workout tomorrow, I am going to have to workout FIRST thing in the morning.... I have such a hectic day and need to be on top of my game. What has to be done.... HAS TO BE DONE!! No excuses!!

Upper body & Abs:

I will have to do my workout super early in the morning and then run with Raha at 1:30.  It'll be interesting to see how I feel doing two workouts in one day... Haven't done that since I competed! You can follow my workout.... If you are a part of the FGG Members Community.. I'm doing the  Sick Upper Body Pump

My Iphoto is having techincal issues, so I can't post my delicious recipes! BASTARD! GRR...

Well, Li'll Justin Bieber is on, and I just think he is too freakin adorable! CIAO!

Any Goddesses in the house??? Can we chat about YOU & Why You are NOT using weights in the gym, and what you are missing out on???

Mind if I put a little damper on your current routine?

I love BRAGGING about how I can change MY body, your body anyone’s body and add a shot of some self esteem, and empowerment...and BAM you have one
HOT fiesty, FIT and gorgeous goddess!

Next time you walk into your gym....take it all in. Look around, watch what all the wome are doing. How many are on the cardio machines and how many are using kettlebells, heavy weights and big medicine balls? How many women were texting on their phones while doing the Aductor Abductor machine in slow- motion? Remember my article in the NY times? NOTHING drives me MORE crazy than women yapping on their phones in the gym! I bet they go and brag to their friends about how much they sweat or how hard they worked out! NOT! Those are the SAME women who go to the gym with NO food in their bellies and after they did the same monontenous workout as the day before, they eat the same BORING food that does absolutely nothing for their bodies.
They take in JUST enough calories to bat a fake eyelash! Sheesh!

What is so sad FOR ME to watch year after year, is that the SAME women are on the same machines, eat the same foods and expect DIFFERENT things to happen. They can’t understand why after doing the Arc Trainer for 2 hours- 5 days a week, they can’t lose body fat, and they have saggy tushes.... so what do they do? They eat EVEN LESS, they get LIPO, or they start taking fat burners.... Meanwhile.......

I get approached in the women’s lockeroom at LEAST 2 times a week from all sorts of women asking me how I look like I do, and what is my SECRET. I have to pause and take a deep breath in before I speak, because I never know how the person will take what I am about to say.

My answer: “It’s my nutrition.”
Woman: “Oh, I have seen you workout, you are intense.”
My answer: “Yes I am intense in the gym, but MORE intense in my kitchen.”
Woman: “So, you eat what, about 2 meals a day”?
…..This is where I start to BOIL!
My Answer: ‘Um, More like 6-7 times a day”. I live a very healthy lifestyle.
Woman: “ Oh, I guess I’ll never have your abs, I love wine and bread and cheese.
… I just smile and thank her for the compliments and move on!
UGH!
For all of you CARDIO queens out there... Ever hear of the word Plateau? Adaptation? You keep on rockin’ the Elliptical or Arc trainer, stationary bike or treadmill and you will see what happens.. You will lose any ounce of lean muscle you have (which makes your skin tight and gives you a beautiful shape) and you will start to feel loose, saggy and gravity will take over!
I want you to imagine your body as a car. When you are cranking out a ton of cardio, you are making your body very fuel efficient. Sounds great, right? Sure.Until you realize that “fuel” is actually body fat. This means that you can do a ton of cardio while using very little fuel (body fat) because your body adapts to it so quickly.
Pretty soon you can do hour upon hour of cardio and still not get the results you want.

I am NOW training for a FULL marathon. This does NOT mean that I focus ONLY on running! I would look like a starving crack head! No joke! My goal is NOT to look like those full 26.2 marathon runners who look like skeletons running. I LOVE a SPRINTERS body! Fit, muscular strong and FAST as lightening! I can’t get this way just from running!

If your goal is to change your body, then STEP AWAY form the cardio machine! Lift up a dumb bell, eat some ground buffalo, and have a protein shake after your workout! Watch what happens! 12- 16 weeks on consistency and you will start to see definition, strength, looser skinny jeans, and a glowing smile!

I love when a woman says to me: “Tina, I don’t want to get bulky, I gain muscle very fast!” I want to laugh, but at the same time, I want to shake the woman because she hasn’t a clue.  It’s almost impossible for you to get big and bulky unless you plan on using steriods and last I checked.... You aren’t “ARNOLD”.You are a woman, your body does not make enough testosterone for you to grow like that. You would have to  consume thousands of calories in addition to supplementation, and lift weights your husband couldn’t lift.

Think about how hard it is for some GUYS to gain muscle and lose body fat to change their physiques! Why would you think it would be easier for you? NEWSFLASH: Guys lose body fat WAY faster than women! We have LOTS of ESTROGEN, and MEN have HIGHER levels of TESTOSTERONE- END OF STORY!.

Maybe you are in a bit of denial? You may have muscle and your skinny jeans may be tight, but did you ever think about the little layer (DON’T GET MAD AT ME) of FAT on top of your muscle??? Let me help you shed some weight, and you watch how quick those skinny jeans need to be tossed for a smaller size!

I think women don’t lift weights because they are not confident with walking on the floor and start using machines they know nothing about. I know that gyms can be intimidating- They always have been, especially to women who never used weights and especially to older women.

It’s not that hard to figure out a beginning program, especially with all of the fitness mags out there and all of the websites revolving around fitness. If you walk into any gym, you will see trainers on the floor... You should be able to ask them questions, do a few sessions and get proper instruction of the machines and cardio.

Now that you are confident on the floor, and have your routine, let’s say you want MORE! You want to change your physique, and you want to see your abs, your biceps and your triceps.
This tells me that maybe you have a layer of bodyfat on top of your muscles so they can’t be seen right now...

In all of my years working with women, one thing if for sure- YOU EAT TOO MANY CARBS, You don’t know the difference between a simple carb and a complex carb, and you have no idea what CYCLING your carbs means. You probably don’t eat enough protein or maybe TOO much of that too, or MAYBE you are NOT eating enough of ANYTHING because you are afraid to gain FAT. So when you see the “SKINNY” girl on the treadmill who looks like a match stick, she is what you would call “SKINNY FAT”. She has nothing but bones, fat and skin holding her together and no muscle.

If you are looking for the NEXT BEST diet or the easy way out, then stop reading my blog- THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN EASY WAY OUT.... One thing I can tell you is that what works for me may not work for you. You MUST learn one thing and that is YOUR BODY.
I may not be a REGISTERED dietitian, but with 20 years experience and overcoming an eating disorder, doing 2 figure competitions, running two half marathons, getting clients off of prescription drugs for heart disease, etc....I think I have an idea about nutrition, and living a clean healthy lifestyle.

There are some different ways to determine how many calories  you need each day. Always go above 1200 calories. Anything LESS and you WILL lose lean muscle, water and you will end up gaining MORE body fat which will leave you looking “SKINNY”, saggy and loose- or like some would call it: SKINNY FAT

Just recently, I developed a challenge that was geared towards women who wanted to lose anywhere from 8-25lbs. When these women saw how many calories they were having each day (1250-1675) they panicked and thought it was TOO MANY calories. I laughed, because if they had counted the calories THEY were taken in BEFORE the challenge and added in all the glasses of wine or little niblets of cheese, they would then see what HIGH calories looked like. If I went any lower on the plan, their metabolisms would bottom out, and once they go off the plan, their waist size would INCREASE, and I would be to blame. No thanks! Besides, I don’t design DIET PLANS, I design lifestyle changes.... BIG DIFFERENCE.

I bet you wonder how many calories you actually NEED each day. Well, we all require different caloric intakes, because we are ALL different shapes and sizes. You & I may be the same height and weight, but if you don’t workout and I do...GUESS WHO NEEDS MORE CALORIES? My point is that my daily nutritional intake would be SO different than yours.

The one thing we ALL need EACH DAY AT EACH MEAL is Protein. I have about 4 meals a day and at each meal THERE IS PROTEIN. I don’t OVERDO it either. For what I do each day, and for my muscles to NOT shrink and for my metabolism to stay high even at rest, I take in about 60-100 grams of protein per day broken downand divided into my meals.

Carbohydrates can be a little tricky! We NEED them, but we need the RIGHT carbs at the RIGHT TIMES! I tell my clients that if you want a high carb meal, Your best bet is to have it about 1-2 hours BEFORE your workout or run, and or 10-20 minutes AFTER your workout. That is when your muscles will suck them right up and help you recover and repair. Any carbs your body doesn’t use....Gets stored as fat- SO NOT COOL!

SO you may want to try a ZIG ZAG approach. On training and cardio days, have a higher carb day. On NON training days, have LOWER carb days.

Poor FAT gets a bad rap, when in fact, I would rather have MORE FAT than carbs in my body! How’s that!?!? These days my diet is pretty much a 20/ 40/ 40 split. 20% from protein, 40% from carbs and 40% from fats. I also run 4-5 days a week as well as do some super dooper weight training workouts. NOT your average workouts!

Maybe try this: On days where you are increasing your carbs, LOWER your fats. On your off training and cardio days, lower your carbs and increase your fats.

Oh and PS, by “FATS” I mean Avocado, coconut oil, nut butters- Catch my drift?

In my next blog post, I will set you up with a meal plan you can’t screw up! FOLLOW MY LEAD ladies, and you will be WELL on your way to looking lean and fit!

Monday was FUN!

LOVED my workout today! Not going to exaggerate! I woke up SUPER tired today, but I am not going to even give PREGNANCY a second thought- I was just super tired. We went to bed at 9:00 last night and for whatever reason, I don't think I went into REM sleep until about 4:00 am... by 6:05, I jumped up still groggy, made my breakfast and out the door I flew.

All morning I was yawning, but not for a split second did I think about NOT running! Oh, I am doing this! With summer in full swing, my clients are preparing their families for summer get-a-ways. some of my clients leave me from June until September, so my schedule lightens up. In some ways, I look forward to it, ONLY because I get a break. A chance to revive my mind, refresh and get some new workouts lined up to kick some serious summer ass in September!

If you read yesterdays blog, you know the workout I had. My run was finished in 28:51. I won't lie, It was FREAKING hard. I am so used to sprinting lately that to keep my mind focused on distance, NOT time, and slower running, NOT fast hard running- It was a SUPER CHALLENGE for me.

I didn't post what I did after my workout but I will tell you doing the SCI-FIT ergometer for 10 minutes left my shoulder and arms with a sick pump. If you haven't tried this yet, YOU MUST! As always I run home to suck down my REFRESHING REFUELING DELICIOUS Green Goddess Shakes!

In my shake:
1 cup vanilla almond milk
1 packet berry Vega protein
2 tbsp bee pollen
1/2 cup backberries
1 tbsp Maca powder
**Blend for 1 minute and suck it down!

Here are my good eats for the whole day.... I have been on the go so I haven't been able to really enjoy ALL the meals I usually do, but here goes...

Meal one: 6:30 while driving
1/2 cup GF steel cut oats
1 scoop Beverly protein
1 cup frozen blueberries
cinnamon

Meal two: Snack at 9:30
Kind Bar

Then I went to workout... SO my shake was around 1:00

Meal three: POST/workout shake
recipe above

Meal four: Dinner (6:30)
eggplant chana masala (LOTS OD IT!)

Meal five: 8:00 snack
5 hard boiled egg white

That's all I got for ya... Being on the go really helps me keep my caloric intake on the low end.... and that's how I like it!

Look out for my blog tomorrow where I talk HOLLYWOOD and WHO I think looks INCREDIBLE!!!!!

Here we GO!

Monday is here! I am amped! Ready to run! This week I will run a total of 25 miles. For today's run, it's a nice straight easy loop from my house to a near by Hospital and back. It's flat and mostly sidewalks, but also lots of traffic, so I must be careful and look up at all times.

When I get back, I will be doing an upper body workout at my fitness center.

Oh Did I tell you? Maybe not... I have decided to take a break from my beloved Equinox. It's either I take a break, OR I smash a dumb bell over someones head... I am THAT fed up with ANNOYING INSECURE JEALOUS LITTLE GIRLS! I'm THAT FED UP! So, to make sure I have NO STRESS, no AGGRAVATION or annoyances while I am trying to workout, I plan on using my OWN STATE OF THE ART Fitness Centers in 7 different Clubs. MAYBE in September I will take my membership off of FREEZE.

Until then, I can focus on running outside, and focus on my training while NOT getting distracted. I am so focused on my family, my business and getting pregnant, and these IDIOT (FAKE) Trainers have NO CLUE of anything about WHO I am or WHAT I am about. What is great is that in NO WAY does this effect my  training - as a matter of fact, I SAVE $140 a month for the summer, and get to buy some new clothes! How lucky for me!

So back to my AWESOME plan for this week!
