Happy Halloween!

Some fun things I bet you didn't know about Halloween....

1) Halloween Is The Second Highest Grossing Commercial Holiday After Christmas
What used to be just a singular holiday with minimal things to purchase has turned into an entire "Halloween Season." Between decorative lights and lawn ornaments, elaborate costumes and loads of candy, the average American spends a pretty penny on this fall holiday. However popular Halloween has become, the recession has affected spending for this year's spooky night. Spending is down, according the the National Retail Federation. Shoppers will spend an average of $56.31 on the holiday compared to $66.54 in 2008. Some ways people are cutting down include making homemade costumes, using last year's decorations and buying less expensive candies. For the children's sake, let's hope everyone doesn't resort to giving out apples and pennies. Didn't you just hate that as a kid?

2) Harry Houdini Died On October 31, 1926
The famous magician was killed (accidentally) by a McGill University student named J. Gordon Whitehead who was hitting him in the stomach repeatedly as part of a stunt. A week later he died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix. Despite acute appendicitis, Houdini refused to seek medical treatment.

3) There's A Phobia For That
Samhainophobia is an intense and persistent fear of Halloween that can cause panic attacks in sufferers. Other relevant phobias for this time of year: wiccaphobia (fear of witches), phasmophobia (fear of ghosts), and coimetrophobia (fear of cemeteries).

4) The First Jack-O-Lanterns Weren't Made Out Of Pumpkins
They were originally hollowed-out turnips. The modern practiced mutated from the Irish tradition of carving faces of the the dead onto the gourds and putting candles inside to make them glow. These days your Jack-O-Lantern is most made out of a pumpkin, which most likely came from Illinois--a state that grew 542 million pounds of pumpkin in 2007.

5) One Quarter Of All The Candy Sold Annually Is For Halloween Night
Yes, no matter how much we eat for Christmas and Thanksgiving, Halloween has corned the market on candy. As a country we consume 20 million pounds of candy corn a year. Handing out Halloween treats is the perfect excuse to eat some too, as four-in-ten (41%) adults admit that they sneak sweets from their own candy bowl. And if you're a kid, hang on to your basket, because home is where the candy thief is as 90% of parents admit to sneaking goodies from their kids' Halloween trick-or-treat bags. But whether your stealing some, handing out some or having yours stolen, chances are you'll get your hands (or miss getting your hands) on a Snickers bar, it has been the number 1 Halloween candy for years.

osteoporosis in 3-D

Osteoporosis is a disease, more common in women, that causes bones to become fragile and more susceptible to breaking. It is a real condition with serious effects on women's health and quality of life. Some women -- most commonly those who don’t have good access to health care -- experience fractures that could have been prevented if their osteoporosis had been treated. At the same time, not every woman who is warned about bone thinning needs to be worried. Companies that make drugs for osteoporosis have conducted advertising campaigns for women and health care providers that have created fear and led many women who don’t need the drugs to take them, despite serious side effects and risks.

In recent years, many new osteoporosis drugs have become available, creating a dilemma for women trying to decide which, if any, of these medications they need. Specifically, women want to know when it is appropriate to take a drug for osteoporosis, and which treatments are safest and most effective. The National Women's Health Network believes that the focus of efforts to promote bone health should be on preventing fractures rather than preventing loss of bone mineral density in women who are otherwise at low risk of experiencing a fracture. As you’ll read below, drugs are not always the best approach.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis literally means porous bone. Throughout life, there are constant changes in the structure of bones. A natural process breaks down bones and builds them back up again at the microscopic level. Children and young adults build more bone than they break down. Pregnant women release bone to transfer needed minerals to the developing fetus and then build their own bone strength up again after giving birth. After age 35-40 all adults begin to lose bone as the breaking down process overwhelms the building process. For a few years around the time of menopause, women lose bone more quickly, possibly because they no longer need extra stores of minerals to support a developing fetus.

Osteoporosis occurs when the natural process of aging goes too far and bones become weak and fragile. Osteoporosis has several causes – age alone can be a cause of osteoporosis, especially in people who didn’t build up their bones to their fullest potential during childhood and young adulthood. Medicine can cause osteoporosis – taking high doses of steroids over a period of months can cause significant bone loss, for example. Removing women’s ovaries increases their risk of getting osteoporosis. Inactivity can cause osteoporosis, too – astronauts and people who are not able to walk briskly are more likely to develop fragile bones.

People who have osteoporosis are at greater risk for fracturing their bones, especially in the hip, vertebrae (spine) and wrist. Hip fractures lead to hospitalization, can take a long time to heal, and many women never fully recover from them. Individual vertebral fractures can be completely painless and cause no problems at all, but if multiple fractures develop in the spine it can be very painful and restrict women’s ability to move without serious discomfort.

Alternatives

Alternatives to drugs exist for making and keeping bones strong. The National Institutes of Health’s 2000 Consensus Statement on Osteoporosis reviewed the research on osteoporosis prevention and treatment and found strong scientific evidence that calcium and Vitamin D intake are crucial to develop and preserve strong bones.

Regular exercise (especially resistance and high-impact activities) contributes to the development of bone mass. Other promising interventions focus on preventing fractures: balance training reduces the risk of falling, which is often responsible for broken bones in older people. A few small studies have shown that hip protectors provided along with training on how to use them can help reduce the risk of fracture if a fall occurs. Large randomized trials didn't find any benefit, though. Other practical ways to reduce the risk of falling include making sure that vision prescriptions are up-to-date, checking prescriptions for drug interactions that might cause dizziness, eliminating fall-causing hazards in the home (like slippery rugs), and wearing appropriate shoes.

The Bottom Line

Drug companies are clearly trying to expand the market for osteoporosis drugs; their latest efforts target “non-traditional” populations (like younger women and men) for screening. Many women under age 65 without critical risk factors are being screened for osteopenia and osteoporosis, despite the fact that early screening has not been shown to prevent most serious fractures. The NWHN encourages women under age 65 to reject bone density screening unless they have unusual circumstances that increase their risk.

In addition to thinking carefully about their own risk of experiencing a serious fracture, women need to consider safety issues when deciding whether to take osteoporosis drugs. Also, the treatment’s duration is critical in determining its effectiveness: when a woman stops taking certain osteoporosis prevention drugs, the preventive effects are quickly lost. Don't hesitate to ask your health care provider about the safety and efficacy of any osteoporosis medication and whether non-drug alternatives might be just as effective, based on your personal history and current health status.

Snack Ideas...

Hey gang!
Got a GREAT question today from a fabulous woman who is a fellow blogger. I know a lot of you out there are snacker. I can't say I relate to you, because I simply DO NOT snack, but snacking is NORMAL and if your going to snack, you should be a SMART SNACKER....

QUESTION: Hi Tina,
I am looking for snack ideas??? I usually have low fat yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit and veggies. What else can I eat I want to change it up a little-can you help??
ty
Cathy

First I am going to give you a run down of the top 10 worst snacks! Some of you might get upset....but have no fears, GREAT snacks are right behind!
It's always interesting to sit down with someone and hear what their philosophies are about how to lose weight.

You may be on to the whole salad or veggies and protein thing for your meals, but that doesn't necessarily ensure you will lose weight or maintain a lean physique... believe it or not, most people's snacks are setting them up to fail and they don't even know it.
They're fooled by slick marketing.

The foods listed below are the TOP 10 Snacks that you may think are healthy for you, but are nothing more than sugar and inflammation creators in disguise.

Wheat Thins (inflammatory and high GI)
Most fruit flavored yogurts (loaded with sugar)
"100 Calorie" snack packs (100 empty calories...)
Premade fruit smoothies (all sugar, low fiber)
Vitamin Water (very little vitamins, but lots of sugar)
Slim Fast shakes (35+ grams of sugar - yikes!)
Energy drinks (disrupts adrenal glands natural production, and also thickens your blood the way blood would thicken before a stroke!)
Rice cakes (super high glycemic - spikes blood sugar)
**Most protein bars (high in sugar & fillers)
**Granola & Nutrition bars (low fiber, high in sugars)
Mini pretzels

As you can see I called a few companies out, but then again I'm sure they know their products aren't meant for weight loss. Their products may actually be useful in some respects, but if your goal is body transformation and healthy living you can cross them off your list.

Keep in mind most of these snacks listed above are loaded with hidden sugars that will cause you to crash an hour or so later when your temporary high wears off...

Now here are MY top 10 HEALTHY SNACKS!
1. Lara bars (4 ingredients: fruit, nuts, 2 different spices)
2. 6 Brazil nuts and a handful of Goji Berries (Omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids and anotioxidants)
3. 1 slice Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast, 1 tbsp raw nut butter your choice and 1/2 sliced banana (fiber, whole grains, great source of fats and potassium)
4. 1 cup Greek Yogurt or Goat's milk Yogurt, 1 Scoop RXODUS protein, 1 teaspoon bee pollen & 1/4 cup fresh blueberries (Calcium, protein, Greens, Whey protein, Amino acids, antioxidants)
5. Green Goddess Shake (Rxodus protein, frozzen berries, bee pollen, Chia seeds, water, nut butter) LOADED with NUTRIENTS!
6. Hard boiled egg whites, yellow scooped out, add 1 tbsp hummus to each egg white half(Protein & more protein)
7. Green Goddess Granola (ASK ME)
8. Frozen whipped banana icecream (chopped frozen bananas, peanutbutter, cinnamon & 1 tbsp greek or Goats yogurt (in food processor until whipped)
9. 1 cup ANY Nature's Path cereal with Almond or soy milk- AMAZING!
10. Green Tea ice pops (Most whole Food's and Trader Joe's)

I hope my list helps you figure out what a GOOD HEALTHY SNACK IS! As always I encourage you to email me any questions you may have!

In GOOD HEALTH, ALWAYS!

WOW! This week few by!

I dreaded today! I will tell you why! last June, I took my daughter to get her drivers license. This was supposed to be an exciting day for her as well as myself, because then I don't have to play taxi cab driver.... Well, on our way to Motor Vehicles, we drove through OSSINING. I got zapped by a radar gun!

What a role model huh?!? We drove under an overpass. On the overpass was the cop! So long story short I got a speeding ticket! I was doing 68 in a 45 mph zone! DARN IT! I was just moving with the traffic! Any who, TODAY was the day for court. I plead NOT guilty, as this was advice from a close friend who is a police officer. Again, long story short...On this pretty nice day, I sat in a court room from 12:30 until 3:30!!!! It was well worth the wait because the ticket was dismissed! YAH! :O)

After sitting for that long of a time, I had the sick urge to come home and GO RUNNING! I DID 4 miles in 40 minutes! I don't know why, but I had the greatest run! I am back to feeling great! YA HOO! This picture is exactly what I felt like! I felt invincible!

and now a word about Lactic Acid:

Most runners still believe that lactic acid is released during hard exercise and that this is what limits running performance, as well as being the cause of stiffness. Neither is correct.

Lactic acid does not exist as an acid in the body: it exists in another form called “lactate”, and it is this that is actually measured in the blood when “lactic acid” concentration is determined, as is done from time to time. This distinction is important not only for the sake of correctness, but more importantly, because lactate and lactic acid would have different physiological effects.

The greatest myth is that lactic acid is the cause of the stiffness felt after an event such as a marathon. Stiffness is due mostly to damage to the muscle, and not an accumulation of lactic acid or lactic acid crystals in the muscle.

Read this article from the NY Times! Lacic Acid is a long distance runners FRIEND!

All the same stuff THE GREAT Dr.JACK told us this past weekend!
OH! and BE HERE NOW! Those are my three new favorite words!

Stress and Satan's Cocktail (CORTISOL).

Too much cortisol can have a detrimental effect on your health. What is cortisol and where does it come from? Cortisol (Satan's Cocktail) is produced by the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are two tiny pyramid-shaped pieces of tissue situated right above each kidney. Their job is to produce and release certain hormones and chemical messengers. Adrenaline is manufactured in the interior of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla. Cortisol, the other chemical from the adrenal gland, is made in the exterior portion of the gland, called the adrenal cortex. Cortisol, commonly called hydrocortisone, is the most abundant -- and one of the most important -- of many adrenal cortex hormones. Cortisol helps you handle longer-term stress situations. If stress goes on too long and cortisol levels have stayed too high for too long this can lead to eventual adrenal fatigue and burn-out.

How does stress cause high cortisol?

The HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis is the neurohormonal regulator of the stress response. The limbic system of the brain triggers the hypothalamus to secrete CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) in response to a physical, emotional, or environmental stressor. The CRH then triggers the pituitary gland to secrete ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which activates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol which is then released into the bloodstream. When cortisol blood levels become high, the HPA axis feedback mechanism turns off the corticotropin-releasing hormone which tells the brain and adrenal glands to cut down on cortisol excretion. Continued stress overrides this feedback system leading to continued production of cortisol. You become stuck in alarm mode or “fight or flight”. If our exposure to stress is only for brief periods, and we have a balance in our life between work and play, get adequate rest, and have good nutrition, then occasional stress accompanied by elevated cortisol will not be a problem. Yet if the stress becomes chronic with inadequate nutrition, rest, relaxation and sleep, then we begin to experience chronic excessive cortisol levels.

What Does Cortisol Do?

Some cortisol is essential for life. Cortisol is necessary for normal brain, immune, muscle, blood sugar function, and blood circulation. In the beginning stages of adrenal fatigue cortisol levels are elevated. As the stress continues and the adrenal glands further deteriorate cortisol levels begin to decline. Having too little cortisol contributes to a new set of problems. Serious cortisol deficiency such as Addison’s disease, is a potentially fatal illness.

The Consequences of High Cortisol

Too much cortisol causes: Abdominal obesity High blood sugar (“adrenal diabetes”) muscle wasting Bone loss Immune shutdown Brain (hippocampus) atrophy Poor wound healing Thin wrinkled skin Fluid retention Hypertension
Excessive cortisol frequently causes increased: Fatigue/decreased energy Irritability Impaired memory Depressed mood, decreased libido Insomnia anxiety Impaired concentration Crying Restlessness Social withdrawal Feelings of hopelessness

Chronically high cortisol may contribute to many diseases, including cancer, ulcers, heart attacks, diabetes, infections, alcoholism, strokes, skin diseases, psychosis, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and possibly Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease . High Cortisol may contribute to obesity not only because of the metabolic disruptions (including insulin resistance) that it promotes, but also because it induces “stress overeating,” especially in women.

Is There A Test?

Yes! An Adrenal Stress Index is a simple saliva test that can determine if your cortisol levels are too high or too low. This consists collecting your saliva collection at four times during the day which determines a diurnal cortisol rhythm. The quicker high cortisol levels or adrenal fatigue is discovered the better your chances are for recovery without more serious health consequences.

Ways to Reduce High Cortisol:

1. Eat at regular intervals throughout the day: Avoid skipping meals, as this will create a cortisol release.
2. Excessive carbohydrate intake creates cortisol release in response to constantly elevated insulin levels. Eat complex carbohydrates instead.
3. Utilize stress reduction techniques at peak cortisol times: meditation, self-hypnosis, or simply lying on the floor doing belly breathing for 10-15 minutes can work wonders at reducing stress and thus cortisol levels.
4. Get to bed on time. Get at least 7 hours of sleep nightly.
5. Avoid stimulants: Stay away from energy drinks that contain ephedra-like compounds and caffeine. Stimulants shift the body into sympathetic dominance, or "fight or flight". Stimulants can also disrupt your sleeping patterns. If you must drink coffee, be sure that you do not drink any after 2pm.
6. Keep your workouts under 1 hour: At the 1 hour mark, your testosterone levels begin to decline and cortisol levels rise. FIFTY minute workouts are even better.

part II of an incredible class!

Ok, ok, so here is part two of what I learned during my most incredible weekend in the city with Dr. Jack!
When you come into my fitness centers and work with me, my husband or one of my FABULOUS trainers, we are there to MAKE YOUR BODY! FIND YOUR STRENGTH!  Think these three words…and when Dr. Jack said them all weekend, these three little words stuck in my head
BE HERE NOW! Anyone have any idea what that means? Well, I will tell you. When you are in a training session with a trainer, instead of chatting about what you did during the weekend, how about concentrating on your BODY for the 30-60 minutes you have with that trainer. BE HERE NOW means stay in the zone, focus, work hard, and visualize your dream body and MAKE IT HAPPEN! SO today, while I was working out, I literally shut off my IPOD, kept the plugs in my ears and as I did every exercise, I would say “BE HERE NOW” to myself. Let me tell you, I was so zoned in and focused on myself! You should try it!
Sunday morning Dr. Jack was offering a MEDITATION class before class began. SO I got my sleepy cooley to NYC by 7am! I was so glad I took him up on that. I never meditated before. What a great experience. More than half the class showed up. We all closed our eyes with our hands on our laps, as Dr. Jack talked us through it! INCREDIBLE! I was in tune with my body, my breath, my muscles, my nerves. I was in a VERY CALM STATE!
Did you know your breath affects muscles, function, and removing waste? Yep! I felt it. You should try it! Go sit in a room quietly by yourself for 4-5 minutes and just be! Breathe slowly in through your nose and exhale through your mouth, I am telling you, it’s incredible.
BE HERE NOW!
Ok, here is some pretty heavy stuff, it relates to not just your workouts but to YOU and your entire world…. Get ready!

1.  Always have a pad and a pen. Write down your thoughts, your dreams, and your goals. Desire improvement enough to be willing to do something about it. Write down the desires of your heart.
2.  Read over your desires morning and night. Read over thoughtfully and prayerfully
3.  Write what you really expect, don’t be afraid to ask. Stop covering your light and most important; don’t let others cover your light.
4.  Focus on what you can do NOW, where you are, with what you have
5.  Believe completely that your ability to see – even dream of this desire is reason enough to believe you can achieve it. KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! You have to wish or pray with your legs moving! Look forward, never behind!
6.  GIVE THANKS! Be grateful for what you have. Don’t miss the small blessings. Inspirations and ideas will come. Answers will appear. WRIE IT DOWN. Don’t miss the good- GIVE THANKS!
P*M*A
POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE
TOLD YOU ! DR. Jack touches upon EVERYTHING! The man is a GENIUS!

Did you know …
TUNA have no eyelids…Therefore all they do is swim. This means they are ALWAYS MOVING, Always moving means less body fat on them… TUNA are a VERY lean fish!
Long term intensity training can lead to decrease in the strength of muscles; ligaments, skin, bones and endurance.
NO RECOVERY = BROKEN DOWN BODY!
Giving 100% during your workout = faster SUCCESS! You’ll get stronger FASTER!

You should stay within your energy zone (fuel time) of 50 minutes for workouts unless you’re doing just legs, which 60 minutes is OK.
Maximum strength- 1-7 reps
Power- 6-12 reps
Bodybuilding (hypertrophy) 6-12 reps
Muscular endurance- 12-15 reps…..
(Size can be created over time)

Bring up your weak areas but keep strong areas STRONG!
REST DAYS ARE GROWTH DAYS! Enjoy your rest days!
Caffeine after 2pm or any caffeine and your body does not go into REM (deep sleep)
BE HERE NOW!
LACTIC ACID: is a fuel and a GOOD ONE!  Lactic acid feels like your running under water moving slowly, and you have sloppy form. Lactic Acid is fuel for runners. 90 minutes of running, lactic acid turns to glucose, which gets you to the finish line!  :O)
